And the New Name is…….

An official announcement!….

Our previous attempts to select a project name have not gone well. We tried a
poll but the names in the poll were not pre-qualified to determine if they
were usable and the “winning” name was also a strongly disliked name.
Kristian and I each proposed a plan to select a name, but that effort got
sidetracked by a massive flame war on the mailing list.

While our community has some democratic features, ultimately it is a
meritocracy and the people who contribute the most value have the most say.
So in the end a decision was made by the majority of the people who have
contributed the most.

That doesn’t mean that all the discussion was wasted. In fact the chosen name
wasn’t proposed by any of the leaders, but was proposed in one of the naming
threads (michael.krog’s post was the first place I saw it). It was
immediately popular and received very few negative comments.

I’m pleased to announce that the chosen name of our project and community is:

Compiz Fusion

For the record, the following developers and admins either participated in and
supported the selection process (not all voted yes), or have stated their
support for the name:

David Reveman, Erkin Bahceci (cornelius), Guillaume Seguin (iXce), Dennis
Kasprzyk (onestone), Jigish Gohil (cyberorg), Danny Baumann (maniac), Patrick
Niklaus (marex), Roi Cohen (roico), Alex Heck (nesl247), Robert Carr
(racarr), Kristian Lyngstøl (kristianLy), Rico Pfaus (RYX) (conditional),
Quinn Storm (QuinnStorm) and Jeffrey Laramie (imnotpc).

  1. For those of us who are total newbies, please come up with some very basic documentation *with* examples. Beryl installed easily enough, compared to CompIZ, but now there seems to be chaos in both camps. We novice users need the cube style display. Please port it to windoze of get on with the integration and documentation 😉
    thanks,

  2. I like the new name. “Compiz” for it has its base there, “Fusion” to indicate its merge with Beryl. Perfect, and definitely better than many other name changes 🙂

  3. I thought Relic would have been a nice name taking letters from both Compiz and Beryl…just my thought…

  4. Sounds great, glad they dumped Beryl. That was an awful name. Who ever thought that was a great idea?

  5. Well, this is disappointing news.

I’m sorry you guys didn’t go with “Coryl”. First off, it has aesthetics, which, considering the project is about eye candy, should be taken into consideration. Second, it’s a cute, clever play on a real English word. Also, there’s plenty of opportunity to design artwork around it (coral, undersea, sea life, etc.). And it flows off the tongue.

Most importantly, though, it indicated far more the concept of a “fusion” of the two projects (COmpiz and beRYL) than the flaccid addition of the word “Fusion”.

Now not only do we have to spit this cumbersome mouthful out when we talk about the coolest project to grace the Open Source desktop, but it sounds like a blasted soft drink. “Try the new Compiz FUSION!! Now with real fruit flavoring!”

You guys are fantastic developers, I’ll give you that, but I hope your significant others name your children.

Thanks for reading my rant. Now on to things that matter.

  6. I could imagine, that a lot of folks will feel cheated by having “Compiz” included in the new name. It’s as if Beryl had never existed or was considered worthless. A shame.

  7. Well, I’m glad our communities can better utilize their efforts towards the goal of making a powerful yet easy to use desktop compositing system.

I hope to see our combined work transform the desktop computing experience for the common man, who doesn’t, well, want to waste $250, plus hardware.

  8. It’s a nice name. On the end however it’s not the name that matters, it’s the code and the functionality. So, for me, Compiz/Beryl/Compiz Fusion can be named “Four Eyed Cow”, but as long it does what it’s supposed to do, and does good, it’s a great piece of software.

  9. this is too bad. The name suggest its all about compiz but beryl has nothing to with the project. I have used both compiz & beryl. To me beryl offer more easy to find configuration options. I can tune beryl to my needs. Compiz provides no such visible options. This news is bad. Too bad beryl has to go through this.

  10. Beryl was a cooler name cause of the gem connotations… too bad. But alas the larger community of developers now will hell the project progess faster!

  11. Wow. Just returned from my holiday – to find out y’all choosed “Compiz Fusion”.

It was my personal favorite to. I’m glad to be any help!

  12. just incredible. unbeliveble. i just installed and tried compiz fusion and i can not belive my eyes. thank you and keep going.
